Wearable device-based intervention for promoting physical actvity after lung cancer surgery

Emerging evidence suggests that wearable devices are feasible for monitoring physical activity among patients with NSCLC. However, the association between wearable devices and improvement in patient recovery after surgery remains understudied. A nonrandomized clinical trial with 74 intervention patients and 120 control patients at Samsung Medical Center (Seoul, South Korea) found that the intervention group had a smaller decrease in number of daily steps and time spent on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) at 2 weeks after surgery and a larger increase in daily steps and MVPA at 6 months after surgery. The wearable device intervention used in this trial also improved patient-reported dyspnea at 6 months after surgery. The authors conclude that these findings may guide the development of comprehensive rehabilitation programs that integrate wearable devices.
