Validation of the ONKOTEV risk prediction model for venous thromboembolism in outpatients with cancer
Dr. Chiara Cella
The assessment of the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) among outpatients with cancer represents an unsolved topic. The ONKOTEV score is a 4-variable risk assessment model consisting of a Khorana score of more than 2, metastatic disease, vascular of lymphatic compression, and previous VTE event. The prognostic ONKOTEV-2 validation trial at three centers in Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom found that the score resulted in good stratification of the VTE risk
among outpatients with cancer. The authors conclude that the ONKOTEV score can be adopted in clinical practice as a decision-making tool for primary prophylaxis of VTE.
