Validation of a vaginal cervical cancer screening self-collection method for at-home use
Dr. Christine Conageski
The nonrandomized SELF-CERV clinical trial, at 16 centers in the USA investigated the agreement for the detection of high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) between clinician-collected (CC) and self-collected (SC) vaginal samples using a device designed for at-home use. In this trial of 599 individuals with paired SC-CC samples, SC samples compared with CC samples showed high positive agreement for detection of hrHPV and equivalent sensitivity for cervical dysplasia. Device safety and usability were also confirmed. The authors conclude that the SC device is a safe and accurate method for primary HPV cervical cancer screening.
