Trend and survival benefit of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy among American male breast cancer patients, 1998-2016

Analysis of the SEER database revealed that among men with stage I to III unilateral breast cancer, use of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) increased from 1.7% in 1998 to 6.3% in 2016 (p<0.0001). Younger age, more recent year of diagnosis, higher tumor grade, and lower T stage were significantly associated with CPM. In a propensity score-matched model, CPM compared with unilateral mastectomy was not associated with better overall survival (HR 0.83; p=0.553) or breast cancer-specific survival (HR 0.98; p=0.970).
