Treatment of anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions to prevent anal cancer
Prof. Joel Palefsky
Persons living with HIV (PLWH) have an elevated risk of anal cancer compared to the general population. Similar to cervical cancer, anal cancer is preceded by high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs). Treatment for cervical HSIL reduces progression to cervical cancer. The US multicenter phase 3 ANCHOR trial evaluated treatment for anal HSIL among PLWH to prevent anal cancer. The study showed that among participants with biopsy-proven anal HSIL, the risk of anal cancer was significantly lower with treatment for anal HSIL than with active monitoring (quick take video summary).
