Significant advancements in pediatric oncology have led to a continuously growing population of childhood cancer survivors (CCSs). A systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature until July 31, 2023, found 280 studies reporting on social and economic challenges of 389,502 adult CCSs. Compared with their unaffected peers, CCSs experienced considerable socioeconomic difficulties. CCSs were less likely to complete higher levels of education (OR 0.69; 95% CI 0.40-1.18), had higher odds of health-related unemployment (2.94; 1.90-2.47), and had lower rates of marriage (0.72; 0.63-0.84) and parenthood (0.60; 0.49-0.74). The authors conclude that it is crucial to implement survivorship programs that address the unique needs of CCSs.
