Survival outcomes with chemotherapy for resectable gallbladder cancer

Dr. Syed Kazmi

Gallbladder cancer is a highly aggressive disease with a late presentation and poor prognosis. Complete surgical excision is the only potentially curative treatment for early-stage disease. Analysis of the National Cancer Database found that use of adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemotherapy was low in patients with resectable gallbladder cancers. Adjuvant chemotherapy was associated with a survival advantage in these patients, and neoadjuvant chemotherapy was associated with increased survival in node-positive disease. The authors conclude that adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemotherapy should be considered in the treatment of early-stage gallbladder cancer.
