Survival outcomes after breast-conserving therapy compared with mastectomy for early-stage breast cancer

Breast-conserving therapy (BCT) followed by radiotherapy and mastectomy are the most common locoregional treatments for early or locally advanced breast cancer. Recent retrospective studies have reported that BCT led to improved overall survival in some populations. Now a retrospective cohort study using the SEER database (2010-2015) found that among women with early-stage breast cancer with 5 cm or smaller tumors breast conserving therapy compared with mastectomy resulted in better survival outcomes.
