Subsequent primary cancer risk among five-year survivors of adolescent and young adult cancers
Dr. Hyuna Sung
A comprehensive examination of the incidence and mortality of subsequent primary cancers among adolescent and young adult (AYA, age 15-39 years) cancer survivors is lacking. Analysis of 9 SEER registries (1975-2013) found that AYA cancer survivors were almost twice as likely to die from a new primary cancer as the general population. The authors conclude that primary care clinicians need to prioritize cancer prevention and targeted surveillance strategies in these individuals.
