Sleep characteristics and cancer recurrence and survival after resection of stage III colon cancer

A prospective observational study included 1175 patients with resected stage III colon cancer enrolled in the CALGB/SWOG 80702 randomized adjuvant chemotherapy trial. The patients completed a self-reported questionnaire on dietary and lifestyle habits 14-16 months post-randomization. Patients sleeping ≥ 9 hours relative to 7 hours per night had worse disease-free survival (HR 1.62; 95% CI 1.01-2.58). Patients sleeping ≤ 5 hours (versus 7 hours: HR 2.14; 95% CI 1.14-4.03) or ≥ 9 hours (versus 7 hours: HR 2.34; 95% CI 1.26-4.33) had worse overall survival. Self-reported sleep adequacy and daytime sleepiness were not associated with outcomes. The authors conclude that interventions targeting optimizing sleep health might improve outcomes after resection of stage III colon cancer.
