Single-center retrospective study of efficacy and safety of nab-paclitaxel for taxane-pretreated metastatic breast cancer

A retrospective study at Jiangsu Cancer Hospital (Nanjing, China) evaluated efficacy and safety of nab-paclitaxel in taxane-pretreated patients with metastatic breast cancer (mBC). The study found a median progression-free survival of 7.20 months (95% CI 6.63-7.80), with objective response rate 29.6%, disease control rate 83.6%, and clinical benefit rate 56.4%. Activity of nab-paclitaxel was seen in patients with sensitivy to earlier taxanes as well as in previously taxane-resistant patients, with median PFS 7.57 months and 4.43 months, respectively. The most frequent adverse events were sensory neuropathy (89.8% of patients), neutropenia (48.7%), and anemia (35.6%). The authors conclude that nab-paclitaxel demonstrated clinical activity in taxane-pretreated mBC patients. These results suggest nab-paclitaxel as the preferred chemotherapy regimen in mBC patients, regardless of their sensitivity to previous taxanes.
