Single-center randomized trial of acupuncture for nocturia in survivors of prostate cancer
Dr. Jun Mao
Nocturia affects more than half of survivors of prostate cancer. The NOCTURNAL trial, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York, NY) randomized prostate cancer survivors reporting nocturia to acupuncture (once weekly for 10 weeks) or waitlist control. Acupuncture produced greater reduction in nocturia episodes than waitlist control at week 10 and at week 14, and also produced greater reduction in International Prostate Symptom Score at week 10 and week 14. The most common adverse events with acupuncture were mild dizziness (5% of participants) and mild insomnia (5%). The authors conclude that acupuncture resulted in reduction of nocturia among prostate cancer survivors.
