Single-arm phase 3 study of segmentectomy for ground-glass dominant lung cancer with a tumor diameter of 3 cm or less including GGO
Prof. Shun-ichi Watanabe
Lobectomy is the standard procedure for resectable non-small cell lung cancer. The single-arm phase 3 JCOG1211 trial, at 42 centers in Japan, evaluated segmentectomy with hilar, interlobar, and intrapulmonary lymph node dissection for NSCLC up to 3 cm in size, including ground-glass opacity (GGO) and predominant GGO. The five-year relapse-free survival was 98.9% (95% CI 95.9-99.1). Grade 3 or 4 early postoperative complications were seen in seven patients (2%), but there were no grade 5 treatment-related deaths. The authors conclude that segmentectomy should be considered as a standard treatment for patients with predominantly GGO NSCLC with a tumor diameter of 3 cm or less.
