Risk of venous thromboembolism in ovarian cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy
Dr. Elizabeth Jewell
A study at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York, NY) found that among patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy for ovarian cancer the overall risk of venous thromboembolism was higher than 25%; either before NACT (13.8%), during NACT (11.6%), during the intraoperative and 28-day postoperative period (3.9%), and during the adjuvant period (1.3%). Since Khorana scoring was not predictive in this population, increased screening or use of prophylactic anticoagulation may be considered.
