A retrospective study compared the screening performance metrics across racial and age groups in het National Mamography Database (NMD). The study analyzed 29,479,655 screening mammograms performed in 13,181,241 women between Januari 1, 2008 , and December 31, 2021. The overall recall rate was 10.00%, the cancer detection rate was 4.18/1000, the positive predictive value for recalls was 4.18%, biopsy recommendation 25.84%, and biopsy performed 25.78%. With advancing age, recall rate significantly decreased, while the other measures increased. Compared with White women, African American women had significantly higher recall rates, but lower values for the other performance measures. The authors conclude that screening mammography is effective, while African American women have poorer outcomes from screening mammography compared to White women.
