Retrospective study of overall survival with proton beam radiation therapy for central nervous system tumors in adult and pediatric patients

There is no clear information about the overall survival outcomes with proton beam therapy (PBT) with overall survival for tumors of the central nervous system. A retrospective study using the National Cancer Database from 2004 to 2022 found that use of PBT increased during the study period and was associated with improved OS compared with photon RT among all patients, among pediatric patients, and among adult patients. PBT was also associated with improved OS versus photon RT in subgroups with different histologies and in subgroups who did and did not receive surgery.
