Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hypertension are common in childhood cancer survivors (CCSs). A retrospective cohort study in Ontario (Canada) over a 27-year period compared 10,182 CCSs aged ≤ 18 years with 40,728 children who had been hospitalized and a general pediatric population of 35,307 individuals. In this study, CCSs had a significantly higher estimated risk of developing CKD or hypertension compared with children in the two comparison cohorts. The authors conclude that these findings suggest that the development of updated evidence-based international guidelines for screening of late kidney outcomes in CCSs is warranted.
