Retrospective cohort study of the association of socioeconomic status and overall survival among patients with hematological malignancies

Socioeconomic status (SES) is known to impact the course and outcome of cancers. A retrospective cohort study in Denmark investigated the temporal trend (2005-2020) in associations of SES with survival among patients with multiple myeloma (MM), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), or diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). The study including 5677 patients found no significant differences in survival according to SES among patients with MM, but there were differences for patients with AML or DLBCL. After correction, the association among DLBCL patients was no longer significant, but the association among AML patients remained. The association of SES with survival among AML patients was observed mainly during the first two years after diagnosis. The authors conclude that the differences originated in factors specific to AML.
