Retrospective cohort study of siumple hysterectomy as alternative to radical hysterectomy for early-stage cervical cancer

A retrospective cohort study by researchers of Sichuan University (Chengdu, China) using the SEER database found that among patients with early-stage cervical cancer (tumor size ≤ 2 cm, no lymph node metastasis, and no distant metastasis) simple hysterectomy compared to radical hysterectomy resulted in similar cancer-specific survival (HR 1.00; p=0.985) and overall survival (HR 0.90; p=0.256). In multivariate analysis, hysterectomy type was not an independent prognostic factor for cancer-specific survival (p=0.707) or overall survival (p=0.103). The authors conclude that patients with early-stage cervical cancer could undergo less radical surgery without compromising oncologic outcomes.
