Retrospective cohort study of cardiac events and survival among patients with EGFR-mutated NSCLC treated with osimertinib versus other EGFR TKIs

A retrospective cohort study at National Cheng Kung University Hospital (Tainan, Taiwan) compared cancer therapy-related cardiac events (CTRCEs) in EGFR-mutated NSCLC patients starting treatment with osimertinib (n=195) versus other EGFR TKIs (n=206).The median duration of follow-up was 23.2 months (IQR 15.2-31.5). The incidence of CTRCEs was higher in the osimertinib group than in the other EGFR TKI group (14.9% versus 4.4%). After correction for relevant cardiovascular risk factors, the subdistribution HR was 4.00 (p<0.001). In addition, CTRCEs were independently associated with overall survival. The author conclude that these findings highlight the need for ongoing cardiac monitoring of these patients, regardless of preexisting cardiac risk factors.
