Retrospective cohort study of abiraterone versus enzalutamide among US veterans with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer

A multicenter retrospective study in the United States compared outcomes with first-line abiraterone acetate versus enzalutamide among all US veterans with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer between July 2017 and April 2023. The study included 1258 patients receiving abiraterone (median age 73 years; IQR 69-79) and 311 patients receiving enzalutamide (median age 74 years; IQR 69-79). Both groups had similar estimated rates of tumor growth and similar overall survival. These findings did not change after performing either inverse probability weighting or 1:1 exact matching. The authors conclude that these findings suggest abiraterone and enzalutamide have comparable outcomes in patients with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer.
