Retrospective cohort study of a skin cancer surveillance program for solid organ transplant recipients
Dr. Marilyn Kwan
The Kaiser Permanente Skin and Ultraviolet Neoplasia Transplant Risk Assessment Calculator (KP-SUNTRAC) incorporates established clinical risk factors to stratify recipients of solid organ transplant (SOT) in low-, medium-, high-, and very high-risk groups for posttransplant skin cancer. A retrospective cohort study including 2083 SOT recipients matched with 26,199 nonrecipients found that SOT recipients had a 7.8-fold increased risk of developing posttransplant skin cancer. Implementation of KP-SUNTRAC was associated with improved screening rates and increased risk of first-detected skin cancer in higher-risk groups without increasing short-term health care utilization.
