Retrospective analysis of etiologies and outcomes of diabetic ketoacidosis in cancer patients
Dr. Sonali Thosani
Retrospective analysis among cancer patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) at MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, TX) found that type 1 diabetes was the underlying cause of DKA in 21% of patients, whereas 49% had known type 2 diabetes and in 30% DKA was induced by drugs such as immune checkpoint inhibitors, SGLT2 inhibitors, and steroids. A total of 39% had poorly controlled diabetes with HbA1c > 9% (75 mmol/mol). There were no in-hopital deaths among the type 1 diabetes patients, whereas there was substantial 30-day mortality
among the patients with type 2 diabetes or drug-induced diabetes.
