Residual risk of breast cancer after bariatric surgery
Prof. Nehran Anvari
Excess adiposity confers higher risk of breast cancer for women. It is unclear whether among women who have lost substantial weight, previous obesity confers residual increased risk of breast cancer. A study in Canada found that bariatric surgery was associated with a reduced risk of developing breast cancer for women with prior obesity equivalent to that of a women with a BMI less than 25 and a lower risk when compared to all groups with BMI equal to or greater than 25.
