Real-world outcomes with second-line lenvatinib after failure of first-line immunotherapy for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma
Prof. Amit Mahipal
Immunotherapy with atezolizumab plus bevacizumab as well as tremelimumab plus durvalumab has recently become the preferred first-line treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (aHCC). The optimal second-line therapy after failure of immunotherapy is not known. A retrospective study at three Mayo Clinics evaluated lenvatinib as second-line option for aHCC. Lenvatinib resulted in ORR 30.4%, DCR 56.5%, median progression-free survival 3.7 months, and median overall survival 12.8 months. Discontinuation due to adverse events occurred in 19% of patients. The authors conclude that the study supports the use of lenvatinib following immunotherapy for aHCC.
