Randomized trial of effect of invitation letter in language of origin on breast cancer screening attendance in Norway
Prof. Solveig Hofvind
Several studies have shown substantially lower attendance rates for mammographic screening among immigrants compared with non-immigrants. A randomized trial in Norway investigated the effect of an invitation letter in language of origin on breast cancer attendance. The overall attendance was 46.5% in the study group versus 47.4% in the control group. There were no statistical differences in attendence after stratification by language, age at invitation, or years since immigration. The authors conclude that several barriers to breast cancer screening may exist among immigrants, and the language of the invitation letter is probably only a part of a complex explanation.
