Very high-risk (VHR) prostate cancer is characterized by high PSA levels, high Gleason score, and/or advanced T category. A retrospective cohort study investigated the association of radiation facility volume with survival among 25,219 men receiving radiation and androgen-deprivation therapy for VHR prostate cancer. Treatment at a radiation facility with high annual volume of similar cases was independently associated with improved overall survival. This association was significant for academic and nonacademic centers. The authors conclude that the expertise and resource that accompany high-volume treatment facilities are associated with improved outcomes among men with VHR prostate cancer.
