Artificial intelligence (AI) as an independent reader of screening mammograms has shown promise in retrospective studies, but the retrospective study designs have high risk for biases and do not assess the integration of AI in existing study workflows. The prospective ScreenTrustCAD trial in Sweden aimed to assess whether double reading of mammography images by AI and one radiologist can achieve non-inferior cancer detection compared with double reading by two radiologists. The The study found that replacing one radiologist with AI for independent reading of screening mammograms resulted in a 4% higher cancer detection rate compared with radiologist double reading.
