Predictors of quality of life and functional recovery in older patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery
Prof. Riccardo Audisio
The multinational prospective GOSAFE study evaluates risk factors for failing to achieve good quality of life (QOL) and functional recovery (FR) among patients aged 70 years or older undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer (CRC). The majority of patients experienced good QOL and stayed independent after CRC surgery. Predictors for not reaching these outcomes were postoperative complications, preoperative Flemish Triage Risk Screening Tool ≥ 2, ECOG performance status ≥ 2, and Charlson Age Comorbidity Index≥ 7. The authors conclude that in patients with these risk factors a less stressful surgery could be considered.
