Population-based survey study of the association between alcohol use and cancer risk in the US
Dr. Sanjay Shete
In the US, an estimated 75,000 cancer cases and 20,000 deaths for cancer are associated with alcohol every year. A population-based survey study by researchers for MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, TX) investigated public awareness of the association between alcohol use and cancer risk in the US. Among 5937 respondents, 40.6% were aware that alcohol increases cancer risk, 39.1% were not aware, and 20.4% were uncertain. Awareness of the association between alcohol and cancer was lower among non-Hispanic Black respondents, those with no more than some college education, and those believing cancer prevention is not possible.
