Population-based study of cancer risk in men with a family history of breast cancer

The association between a family history of breast cancer (FHBC) in female first-degree relatives (FDRs) and cancer risk in men has not been evaluated. A population-based study in South Korea included cancer-free men with or without FHBC in FDRs, age-matched in a 1:4 ratio. During follow-up for an average of 4.7 ± 0.9 years, FHBC in a FDR was a significant risk factor for pancreatic cancer (aHR 1.35; 95% CI 1.07-1.70), thyroid cancer (1.33; 1.12-1.56), prostate cancer (1.28; 1.13-1.44), and breast cancer (3.03; 1.13-8.17). FHBC in both mother and sister was associated with overall cancer risk in men (aHR 1.69; 95% CI 1.11-2,57). The authors conclude that men with FHBC may require cancer surveillance.
