Population-based prospective study of mtFIT versus FIT in a colorectal cancer screening program

The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is widely employed for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. However. its sensitivity fo advanced precursor lesions is suboptimal. The multitarget FIT (mtFIT), measures hemoglobin, calprotectin and serpin family F member 2. A population-based prospective study in The Netherlands validated and investigated the clinical utility of mtFIT versus FIT in the setting of CRC screening. mtFIT showed a higher detection rate for advanced adenoma. Modelling demonstrated that mtFIT-based screening could reduce CRC incidence by 21% and associated mortality by 18% compared with the current Dutch CRC screening program, at feasible cost.
