Erosive gastro-eosphageal reflux disease (GERD) is a risk factor for esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). A population-based cohort study in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden evaluated the association of endoscopically confirmed non-erosive GERD with EAC-risk. During 2,081,051 person-years of follow-up 228 of 285,811 non-erosive GERD patients developed EAC. The incidence was similar to that of the general population. As expected, among patients with erosive GERD the EAC risk was elevated. The authors conclude that endoscopically confirmed non-erosive GERD does not require additional endoscopic monitoring for EAC.
