Population-based cohort study of the association between statin use and liver cancer risk in heart failure patients

Statins are the most widely prescribed lipid-lowering agents. Statins also have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. A nationwide population-based cohort study in Taiwan found that among heart failure patients, use of statins was associated with lower risk of liver cancer (aHR 0.26; 95% CI 0.20-0.33). This effect was seen with both lipophilic statins (aHR 0.34; 95% CI 0.26-0.44) and hydrophilic statins (0.42; 0.28-0.54). The effect was independent of age, sex, comorbidity, or use of concomitant drugs.
