The phase 3 CAPTAIN-1st study, at 28 hospitals in China, randomized patients with previously untreated recurrent of metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma to camrelizumab or placebo, added to six cycles of gemcitabine-cisplatin chemotherapy, followed by camrelizumab or placebo maintenance therapy. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival per independent review committee. Median PFS was 9.7 months with camrelizumab versus 6.9 months with placebo (HR 0.54; p=0.0002).The authors conclude that camrelizumab plus gemcitabine and cisplatin could be a new standard of care for previously untreated R/M NPC.
