Whereas survival for the overall breast cancer population is well-documented, survival of patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) is hard to quantify due to lack of reliable data on disease recurrence in national cancer registers. A nationwide study in Sweden used machine learning to identify the total MBC population diagnosed between 2009 and 2016. Among the identified patients 18.3% had de novo MBC while 81.7% had recurrent disease. Median OS was 29.8 months, with median OS 37.0 months and 9.9 months for patients with HR positive and HR negative MBC, respectively.
