A population-based observational study in Scotland evaluated effectivity of a bivalent HPV vaccine for prevention of cervical cancer incidence. Among women immunized at age 12 or 13 years no cases of invasive cancer were seen, irrespective of number of doses. Women vaccinated at age 14 to 22 years and given 3 doses of the bivalent vaccine showed a significant reduction in incidence of the disease compared with unvaccinated women: 3.2 per 100 000 (95% CI 2.1-4.6) versus 8.4 per 100 000 (7.2-9.6). Unadjusted incidence was significantly higher in women from most deprived (Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 1) areas compared with women from least deprived SIMD 5 areas: 10.1 per 100 000 (95% CI 7.8-12.8) versus 3.9 per 100 000 (2.6-5.7), while women from SIMD 1 areas showed a significant reduction in incidence following 3 doses of the vaccine: 2.29 per 100 000 (0.62-5.86) versus 13.1 per 100 000 (0.95-16.9) among unvaccinated women.
