Multinational study of risk stratification for early-onset colorectal cancer
Prof. Richard Hayes
Incidence of colorectal cancer among individuals aged less than 50 years has been increasing. As screening guideline lower the recommended age of screening initiation, concerns including the burden on screening capacities and costs have been recognized. A multinational study found that combination of an environmental risk score (16 lifestyle and enviromental factors) and a polygenic risk score (141 variants) had the potential to identify individuals at differential relative and absolute risks for early-onset colorectal cancer. Improved discrimination may aid in targeted CRC screening of younger, hig-risk individuals, potentially improving outcomes.
