Multinational randomized trial of open versus minimally invasive radical hysterectomy for early-stage cervical cancer: overall survival in LACC trial
Dr. Pedro Ramirez
The multinational Laparoscopic Approach to Cervical Cancer (LACC) trial compared open radical hysterectomy versus minimally invasive radical hysterectomy for stage IA1, IA2, or IB1 cervical cancer. Overall survival results after 4.5 years of follow-up have now been published. At 4.5 years, overall survival rate was 90.6% in the minimally invasive surgery group versus 96.2% in the open surgery group (HR for death of any cause 2.71; p=0.007). At 4.5 years, disease-free survival rate was 85.0% in the minimally invasive surgery group and 96.0% in the open surgery group (HR 3.91; p<0.001; p=0.95 for noninferiority). The authors conclude that an open approach should be standard of care.
