Multinational phase 3 trial of atezolizumab plus bevacizumab and chemotherapy for metastatic, persistent, or recurrent cervical cancer

The GOG240 trial established bevacizumab with chemotherapy as standard first-line therapy for metastatic, persistent, or recurrent cervical cancer. The phase3 BEATcc trial, at 92 centers in Europe, Japan, and the USA evaluated addition of atezolizumab to this regimen. The trial included 410 patients who were randomized to atezolizumab plus standard therapy or standard therapy alone. The median progression-free survival was 13.7 months with atezolizumab plus standard therapy versus 10.4 months with standard therapy (HR 0.62; p<0.0001). At the interim overall survival analysis, median overall survival was 32.1 months versus 22.8 months (HR 0.68; p=0.0046). Grade 3 or worse adverse events occurred in 79% of patients in the atezolizumab plus standard therapy group and in 75% of patients in the standard therapy group. The authors conclude that adding atezolizumab to standard therapy significantly improved progression-free and overall survival.
