Standard first-line treatment for patients with advanced or metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (aESCC) is platinum-based chemotherapy. The multinational phase 3 ORIENT-15 study randomized aESCC patients to first-line chemotherapy with sintilimab (anti-PD-1) or chemotherapy with placebo. The study found longer overall survival with sintilimab-chemotherapy than with placebo-chemotherapy, among all patients (upper panel) and among patients with PD-L1 combined positive score ≥ 10% (lower panel).
