Multicenter randomized trial of an online mindfulness program to reduce fear of recurrence of breast, prostate, or colorectal cancer
Prof. Patricia Livingston
Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a condition that affects around 60% of people living with cancer. A multicenter study in Australia included adult patients within five years of a diagnosis of stage 1 to 3 breast, prostate, or colorectal cancer who had a FCR Inventory (FCRI) severity score ≥ 13. Participants were randomized 1:1 to a 9-week online mindfulness program (‘MindOnLine’) or waitlist control. MindOnLine reduced significantly FCRI, anxiety, and depression after 9 weeks of intervention; these effects were sustained at 9 months. The authors conclude that MindOnLine significantly mitigated moderate or severe FCR.
