Multicenter randomized phase 3 study of mepitel film for the prevention of acute radiation dermatitis in breast cancer

Tara Behroozian

Radiation dermatitis (RD) is common in patients undergoing breast radiotherapy. A multicenter randomized phase 3 trial in Canada evaluated mepitel film (MF) for RD prevention in patients at risk of RD. The incidence of grade 2 or 3 RD was significantly lower in the MF group compared to the standard care group (15.5% versus 45.6%; OR 0,20; p<0.001). Blistering/peeling, erythema, pigmentation, and edema were signficantly reduced in the MF group. Three of 251 patients removed the film prematurely because of rash or excessive pruritus.
