Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 (CIN2) can spontaneously regress in a sizable proportion of cases. A multicenter prospective study in Italy found regression in 56% of CIN2 patients aged 25 to 45 years. Age was not associated with regression. Predictive biomarkers for regression were early HPV negativity, no p16/ki67 expression, and unmethylated status. The authors conclude that the study found biomarkers contributing to identifying CIN2 patients who could benefit from active surveillance (visual abstract).
