Precision oncology using comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) by next-generation sequencing could be used for identifying targeted therapy opportunities. The clinical utility of CGP before the standard of care is not clear. A multicenter prospective cohort study in Japan evaluated CGP among 180 patients with previously untreated metastatic or recurrent tumors of gastrointestinal, pancreatic, biliary tract, lung, breast, gynecologic, and melanoma origin. Actionable genomic alterations were identified in 100% of patients, and 61% had options of molecular-based recommend therapy (MBRT) determined by the molecular tumor board. Of these, 20% of the patients received MBRT. The authors conclude that CGP, which is currently limited to patients with cancer refractory to standard therapies in Japan, could be of value for patients with previously untreated metastatic or recurrent solid tumors.
