In patients with peritoneal metastasis (PM) from gastric cancer (GC), chemotherapy is the treatment of choice. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapye (HIPEC) are still being debated. The multicenter randomized phase 3 GASTRIPEC-I trial in Germany evaluated survival outcomes of addition of HIPEC to perioperative chemotherapy and CRS among patients with PMs from GC. Addition of HIPEC did not improve overall survival, although it did improve progression-free survival as well as the other distant metastasis-free survival. HIPEC did not significantly increase adverse events.
