A multicenter phase 3 trial in China randomized patients with EGFR-mutated oligo-organ metastatic non-small cell lung cancer to first-line EGFR-TKI with or without thoracic radiotherapy (TRT). The median progression-free survival was 17.1 months in the TKI plus TRT group versus 10.6 months in the TKI alone group (HR 0.57; p=0.004). The median overall survival was 34.4 months in the TKI plus TRT group versus 26.2 months in the TKI alone group (HR 0.62; p=0.029). Severe treatment-related adverse events were reported for 11.9% of patients in the TKI plus TRT group and 5.1% of patients in the TKI alone group. The authors conclude that addition of TRT to first-line TKI was associated with improved survival outcomes and acceptable toxicity among patients with EGFR-mutated oligo-organ metastatic non-small cell lung cancer.
