Multicenter phase 2 trial of bladder preservation with durvalumab plus tremelimumab plus radiotherapy for localized MIBC
Prof. Xavier Garcia-del-Muro
Radical cystectomy has long been considered the standard treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). Give the potential morbidity and quality of life impact of this major surgical procedure, there is a need for alternative approach. The phase 2 IMMUNOPRESERVE trial, at six centers in Spain, evaluated transurethral resection, followed by durvalumab plus tremalimumab and concurrent radiotherapy for localized MIBC. This multimodal approach was feasible and safe, showing high efficacy in terms of response (complete response in 81%) and eliciting bladder preservation in a high percentage of patients (two-year rate of bladder-intact disease-free survival 65%).
