Multicenter phase 1 trial of first-line cediranib plus etoposide and cisplatin for extensive stage SCLC or metastatic neuroendocrine NSCLC
Prof. John Heymach
Patients with extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) have a poor prognosis, and novel treatments are urgently needed. A multicenter phase 1 trial evaluated the VEGF receptor inhibitor cediranib in combination with etoposide and cisplatin in patients with ES-SCLC or metatatic lung neuroendocrine cancer. Among the ES-SCLC patients, common adverse events included nausea/vomiting, neutropenia, diarrhea, grade 1-2 hypertension (44% of patients), and grade 3 hemoptysis (11%). The objective response rate was 67% and the median progression-free survival was 7.9 months. The authors conclude that cediranib plus chemotherapy was well tolerated and had promising clinical activitty among patients with ES-SCLC.
