Late health outcomes among survivors of Wilms tumor diagnosed over three decades

Analysis in the cohort of the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study investigated long-term morbidity and mortality among unilateral nonsyndromic Wilms tumor survivors. The standardized mortality ratio versus the general population was 2.9 (95% CI 2,5-3.5) and the rate ratio of cumulative incidence of grade 3-5 chronic health conditions compared with siblings was 3.0 (2.6-3.5). Survivors receiving treatment limited to nephrectomy, vincristine, and actinomycin D experienced rates of late chronic health conditions and mortality that were largely comparable with noncancer populations. The authors conclude that, with approximately 40% of patients with newly diagnosed Wilms tumor receiving this limited treatment, the burden of late mortality and morbidity in future decades is projected to be lower than that for survivors of earlier eras.
